What are your classes like?

You will find virtually ALL the answers to the most commonly asked questions I receive about yoga classes - right here on my website. As I require a commitment from you in advance (i.e. full terms' payment) - I felt it only fair that I make the website as comprehensive as possible. I have also included testimonials and a blog so please make use of the website as a resource, before deciding whether you wish to attend classes with me.

N.B. Timetable is subject to change so in the first instance, please do get in touch or pick up an up to date leaflet from Kennaway House.

Pilates at Kennaway House, Sidmouth

Picture
Like me, Joseph Pilates suffered from childhood asthma. As a World War I intern, he taught his method to his fellow interns, contributing to their wellbeing and strength until the war was over.

Somehow I knew intuitively even as a young child, that movement (particularly aerobic movement) was part of the key to recovering from asthma. As a pre-teen, unbeknownst to my Mother, I secretly weaned myself off the medicines I had been prescribed for asthma and started my own exercise regime. I also cut out certain foods from my diet. I started to regain some control over my breathing. Then I discovered Yoga. Alongside this, I was finally able to pay for my own dance lessons and nurture my long held dream to become a dancer. During my professional dance training, I had periods of injury due to the strenuous nature of classical ballet training. That is when I discovered Pilates. I trained using Pilates, intensively, throughout my years as a dancer. I consider this training so important that 'core abdominal work' is even integrated into all of my Yoga classes.

What kind of yoga is it?

The short answer to this question is - It is my own style of Hatha yoga. Influenced strongly by the flowing 'vinyasa' style of Ashtanga yoga. However, classes are tailored to the level of group that attends. At the moment, we have a mixed group, of mostly beginners. The (currently) small group classes are suitable for beginners to advanced yoga students. Variations can always be given to suit your ability. Beginners get a little extra help where needed for encouragement, whilst more advanced students can be given slight variations to build confidence.

What should I bring to Yoga Class?

Please be sure to bring along your yoga mat, a small blanket and a bottle of water. (The yoga mat is essential), the rest are suggested for your comfort.

Additional information

It is recommended that you refrain from eating for at least three hours before the start of Yoga class. This might seem a long time as a beginner, but this guideline is offered for safety and comfort during Yoga practice, which works on all the physical and subtle levels of the body.

If you are very hungry closer to the start of class, a small piece of fruit one or preferably two hours before class would be the best option.
